Cape Town - After two weeks of being out of service, the Table Mountain cable car will be back on duty this week, weather permitting, with a new look.
As part of a campaign, called “#NotATourist”, the exterior of the cable car will feature Table Mountain’s ascending contour lines and hiking trials in a bid to “encourage visitors to see the mountain from a new perspective”, said Table Mountain Aerial Cableway marketing manager Collette van Aswegen.
“The scheduled maintenance included a haul rope change, the cleaning of the ropes and slack rope tests, switch and bearings renewal, servicing of the main gearbox, generators and backup generators, as well as general electronic component changes and control checks,” said Van Aswegen.
She said she was not sure what the maintenance work cost but added the annual maintenance, in addition to regular maintenance, was done to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways.
The company boasts giving visitors a “memorable experience and delivering outstanding service, while preserving our natural environment”.
Those who celebrated their birthdays over the two weeks that the cableway was closed can still redeem their complimentary ticket until August 17, on condition they present a South African ID book or card.
“Visitors can also take advantage of the Kidz Season special which entitles two children younger than 18 years a free return trip if they are accompanied by a full paying adult. The offer is valid over weekends and public holidays until October 31,” she said.
