Cape Town - A prank has turned a tiny watering hole on the Western Cape’s Route 62 into a popular destination for holidaymakers.

Ronnie’s Sex Shop isn’t what it seems, but it has become an institution for tourists who love to pose for photos in front of a painted sign on the outside wall.

The shop is actually a small bar originally called Ronnie’s Shop, and it has become a legendary pit stop on a remote stretch of the R62 after the owner’s friends added the word “sex” to the name.

With bras and T-shirts hanging from the ceiling, the bar is owned by Frank Ronald “Ronnie” Price, whose friends painted the word “sex” on the side of the building as a joke.

Price, originally from Cape Town, decided to leave the tongue-in-cheek vandalism, and word quickly spread as people flocked to see the “sex shop”.

Despite its secluded location, it now attracts about 250 visitors a day, mostly by car, although some even fly in by helicopter.

Some visitors aren’t aware Ronnie’s is a bar and expect to find a sex shop when they walk through the doors.

While they won’t find the saucy merchandise, they will find underwear that has been left behind by tourists, who started the trend years ago.

Some has even been signed by visitors passing through, creating the most unusual guestbook ever.

Price originally planned to open a small farm shop, but after his friends’ juvenile joke, he turned it into a bar.

He has since launched a shop, where tourists can buy T-shirts and souvenirs.

Price admits he does get customers who come in looking for a sex shop, and leave feeling very embarrassed.
