Cape Town -

We have two long weekends coming up this month so it’s time to begin planning how you are going to spend them.

The inaugural Woodstock Live festival in Cape Town next Sunday is a good place to start.

It takes place at Trafalgar Park in Woodstock, presented by the Kaggen Music & Film Trust, which is planning a series of diverse, multi-faceted events in Cape Town this year, including socially focused music events, a tea party for the elderly and a music festival for children.

Woodstock Live is about establishing an environment of creative expression and engagement through spontaneous and meaningful cultural conversations and innovative ideas to promote artistic integrity and fearlessness. On the line-up are Goodluck, Das Kapital, Tresor, Mix n Blend, Los Tacos, DJ InviZAble featuring Computer General, Manny Walters, Ben Dey & the Concrete Lions and The Liminals.

Christopher de Vries from The Kaggen Music and Film Trust said: “As a collective we acknowledge the past and celebrate the evolution of Woodstock, striving for an inclusive approach between creative industry, local residents, businesses and communities. Our business model for Woodstock Live is based on the social enterprise model.

“Our first objective is to develop a sustainable model over a term and then following this phase we will aim to develop a profitable series of events. Some of the proceeds from the series will be then be allocated to social beneficiary projects.”

Jessica Schnehage, project manager for Woodstock Live, said: “Woodstock Live encourages collaboration and emphasises the importance of bridging divides by bringing different cultures and genres into the same creative space.”

Children under 12 (accompanied by an adult) enter free and under-18s (with an adult) pay R80. Online tickets (www.ticketpro.co.za) are R120 and are R130 at the gate.

l Trafalgar Park is on the corner of Searle Street and Victoria Road between Nelson Mandela Boulevard and Woodstock main road. Its history includes structures dating back to the late 18th century. It was proclaimed a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1968. Gates open at 1pm and the concert is from 2pm till midnight. Street parking is available in the area surrounding the park, but it is limited so car pooling or Uber are recommended, or walking if you live in the area.

Card facilities will be available at the gate if you want to buy your ticket on arrival, however the bar, food stalls and merchandise stand will only accept cash. For more information email [email protected]
