Nishani Singh, a co-accused in a multi-million Rand Investec Bank fraud case, died in hospital, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed.
Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the DCS, said Singh’s family was notified on Saturday of her death at Baragwanath Hospital.
"She had been referred to an external hospital on numerous occasions for tertiary medical care. Correctional Services is unable to disclose the cause of death but such (information) is made available to the family by the hospital,” Nxumalo told the POST.
Rushil Singh, 40, was arrested by the Hawks in Johannesburg in March 2023, and Singh, 51, handed herself over to the Hawks.
They were charged for fraud, forgery and uttering to the value of around R150 million.
Captain Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng, previously told the POST the siblings' arrest emanated from a case that was registered at the Sandton police station, before being allocated to the Hawks for investigation.
“It is alleged that during the period of January 2021 to March 2023, the pair fraudulently submitted false Stanbic guarantees when they applied for a working capital facility of R35 million. They additionally applied for a term loan agreement of over R150 million in April 2021.
“Consequently, when they exhausted the working capital facility and breached the term loan agreement, Investec Bank demanded guarantees from Stanbic. It was then established that the two guarantees were obtained fraudulently. As a result, Stanbic suffered an actual loss of over R150 million,” Ramovha said in a previous article in the POST.
In August, the Singhs were denied bail in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court. Magistrate Phindi Keswa said the siblings were a flight risk and they could vanish if released on bail.
