Fans have rallied behind renowned actress Brenda Ngxoli after she revealed that her mother had accused her of assault, despite Ngxoli being nowhere near her or her family home.
Ngxoli posted a video on her Instagram page of an argument between her and her mother. In the clip, she can be heard saying that, because of her social standing, her mother is accustomed to physically abusing her before threatening to expose her in the media.
“Beat me! You are used to doing this; even the defamation of character that you keep doing; I will open a case.
“You have been telling people that I beat you when you are the one who wanted to hit me with a brick,” she says.
In the same video, her mother is seen holding a stick and accusing Ngxoli of not cooking for her, to which the actress responds that it is not her responsibility to provide her with food.
“Expose yourself. Come outside and show your face. This is who you are. I am done keeping quiet. No, it is not my responsibility to feed you. Even that is abusive behaviour. I am not shouting at you; I am speaking,” said Ngxoli.
The actress thanked fans for reaching out and showing their support after the ordeal. She admitted that it was never her intention to share her personal journey publicly, and said she had thought she would carry the secret to her grave.

She also took a moment to thank those who made donations, after digital creator Mandisi Tshingana successfully raised more than R100,000 for her.
Ferguson Films also showed their support by donating R50,000 to the actress.
Businesswoman Zandiswa Msikinya, of Lilitha Boutique Farm Lodge, also made a generous donation of R10,000 and added that the sponsorship included pampering sessions and photoshoots for her portfolio.
“I know I did not ask for money but God knows I needed it. I was sitting and wondering about my next plan but you guys showed up. God works in mysterious ways, and I just want to thank every one of you for reminding me that I am a worthy human being,” she said.
Social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their support for the actress.
@lupingcayisa said: “The grace being extended to Brenda Ngxoli speaks to the essence & the core of the South African spirit. This kindness and responsiveness resonates with many South Africans. Salute Mandisi Tshingana for spearheading this noble cause. Congratulations to all who heeded the call.”
“Are we ready to talk about toxic mothers now in light of indaba yekwa meaning (business or matter) Brenda Ngxoli???? Sis, returned to her village in the Eastern Cape after her acting career was maliciously destroyed. This video of her mom is a glimpse of what has become of her life. This here is the daily reality for both her and her daughter,” said @Miye_Tani.
“Shame yaaz, this Brenda issue just reminds me that as much as uvusa ikhaya while usebenza...It's important to also build or buy your own home...Because sometimes some families can be toxic,” said @SthembiD.
This is not the first time Ngxoli has spoken about her toxic relationship with her mother. During MacG's Podcast and Chill last year, she shared her life story, detailing allegations of family abuse and the long-standing toxicity she has endured.
