Durban — The cricket fraternity has come together to mourn the death of Shoaib Moosa, Willowton Group director and chief commercial officer.
Moosa died on Tuesday.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) described Moosa as a “remarkable leader” whose involvement in cricket spanned many years and numerous capacities, including his instrumental role in sponsoring both domestic and international cricket.
CSA said only his advocacy for education matched Moosa's passion for the game, and his legacy is forever intertwined with the creation of the Sunfoil Education Trust (SET).
He was a driving force behind the inception of SET, a fund designed to provide up-and-coming cricketers from disadvantaged communities with educational opportunities that extended far beyond the sport.
The association said Moosa’s contributions were not limited to the cricket field.
He was a pillar of his community and actively dedicated his time to various charitable causes. Most recently, through his heart foundation, he played a crucial role in providing money for heart surgeries for underprivileged individuals, making a profound impact on many lives.
CSA added that Moosa’s enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers and communities. His kindness and vision will never be forgotten.
“Shoaib Moosa was more than just a business partner in cricket; he was a true advocate for the transformative power of both sport and education,” said CSA president Rihan Richards.
“His leadership, generosity, and commitment to uplifting young cricketers through the Sunfoil Education Trust will leave a lasting legacy. His humanitarian work extended far beyond cricket, and his impact on communities across South Africa cannot be overstated.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family during this very difficult time.”
The Hollywoodbets Dolphins and KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) also joined in mourning Moosa.
The franchise and the union said Moosa’s influence on cricket in KZN cannot be understated and the hard work and vision that he showed propelled cricket development into the spotlight.
They said his legacy had been etched on cricket through this passion and vision. His involvement and commitment to the KZNCU, Sunfoil, KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (KZNDSAC) Hub Development Programme has changed the lives of many providing a better and more hopeful future for many generations.
KZNCU president Yunus Bobat passed his condolences to the Moosa family and the Willowton Group.
“KZN Cricket Union are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend and supporter Shoaib Moosa,” Bobat said.
“His steadfast dedication to the development of cricket within our Union has made a lasting impact on the sport and on all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
“His generosity and commitment to the growth of the game at grassroot levels will not be forgotten. We are grateful for his contributions and will honour his legacy as we continue to promote cricket in our community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
KZN Cricket CEO Heinrich Strydom said Moosa’s legacy will live on after his passing.
“We work daily by the mantra that you need to leave the game in a better place than when you found it and Shoaib is an example of this.
“His dedication to the KZNCU, Sunfoil, KZNDSAC Hub Development Programme will live on, and he has been a crucial part in growing development cricket in South Africa.
“We hope that we can continue to honour his legacy through finding the next generation of Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Proteas stars.”
The Western Province Cricket Association’s board, management and staff said they were deeply saddened to hear of Moosa’s death.
“His unwavering support for Western Province Cricket and its structures over the years has left an indelible mark on our community. He was more than a benefactor; he was a true champion of the sport, and his contributions will be remembered and cherished,” the Western Province Cricket Association said.
It added that may Moosa’s soul rest in peace and his legacy continue to inspire future generations.
Lions Cricket said Moosa “Was more than just a leader—he was a visionary who dedicated his life to uplifting communities and making a meaningful impact through his work.”
The franchise said Moosa’s passion for cricket and unwavering commitment to excellence helped forge strong partnerships, and his influence extended well beyond the sport.
“Shoaib’s legacy will forever be a part of the cricketing world, inspiring generations to come,” Lions Cricket said.
It said his presence will be greatly missed, but his contributions and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
