CAPE TOWN – Benni McCarthy will not be on the bench for Cape Town City’s showdown with Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night.
The club confirmed late this afternoon that former Pirates striker McCarthy did not make the trip to Orlando Stadium for the Absa Premiership match due to a family medical emergency.
His wife Stacey is ill in hospital, with City chairman John Comitis telling kickoff.com earlier on Wednesday that she has a collapsed lung.
“Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy will be unavailable for today’s encounter due to a medical emergency in his immediate family. Our thoughts and prayers are with coach Benni and family during this time,” City said on their Twitter account.
Assistant coach Vasili Manousakis is likely to take charge of the Citizens team for what has become a vital clash for the Capetonians after they went down 4-1 to Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend.
After the Pirates clash, City will next be in action in the MTN8 final against SuperSport United on September 29 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban (7pm kickoff).
