Cricket South Africa confirmed the appointment of Mandla Mashimbyi as the new coach of the Proteas Women’s team last Friday.
Mashimbyi takes over the role previously held by Hilton Moreeng, who, during his 11 years at the helm of the women’s team, led the side to unprecedented success, including two semi-final appearances and one World Cup final on home soil.
Mashimbyi will be expected to build on the successes the women’s team has achieved in recent years and potentially help them finally claim the elusive World Cup that has slipped away on several occasions.
With Mashimbyi confirmed as the new coach, IOL Sport takes a closer look at his history and what the experienced mentor could bring to the women’s team.
His playing career was cut short due to injuries
The 44-year-old coach was a fast bowler for Titans, Knights, and the Griquas between 2003 and 2010, playing 48 first-class matches and taking 103 wickets at an average of 29.09. He also featured in 49 List A matches, claiming 59 wickets at an average of 28.03.
After his career was prematurely ended by persistent injuries in 2010, he transitioned into coaching, amassing over a decade of experience both domestically and internationally. He also holds a CSA Level 4 Coaching Certificate.
Demonstrated success as a coach
Some of the major success in his career include leading the Northerns Titans to multiple championships.
The former fast bowler has also served as the bowling coach for the Proteas men's team and was also the bowling coach for the Paarl Royals during the previous edition of the SA20.
With his vast experience as both a player and coach, Mashimbyi could help the women's team reach new heights
