Often seen as a future successor to AB de Villiers with his attacking play all around the wicket, South African batsman Dewald Brevis has yet to deliver on his incredible potential.
In the 2022 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Brevis emphatically announced himself on the world stage.
The 18-year-old, after four of South Africa’s matches, managed three 50s and a century for an incredible 362 runs at an average of 90 and a strike-rate of 86.
Now aged 21, Brevis has experience in four major T20 leagues around the world including 10 matches in the Indian Premier League and 24 in the SA20.
In fact, in T20s Brevis has already played 73 matches notching up six fifties and a century at a career strike-rate of 140.
Though he played just the two T20Is for the Proteas in 2023 and failed to make an impact, his ambitions are to play for South Africa in all formats of the game.
"I absolutely want to play all three formats. I see myself as a multi-format player, and I’m chasing success in Tests, ODIs, and T20s. That’s my ultimate goal, and I can’t wait for the future,” Brevis told SportsBoom.com.
Another setback came at the 2024 IPL auction, where Brevis went unsold after he was unable to grab the headlines with Mumbai Indians in the previous season.
"It's one of those things, but it worked out exactly as it should. I'm excited for what lies ahead. Sometimes, these things happen for a reason.”
Clearly not looking to dwell on being left out at the auction when asked how he felt about it, he said: "I feel like the question is a bit stupid; I've already answered it a few times."
Turning out for MI Cape Town in the SA 20 this season, Brevis scored 57 in their first match against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. In three knocks since then he has failed to pass 14.
Next up for Brevis will be a clash against the Joburg Super Kings in Cape Town on Saturday. First ball is scheduled for 5.30pm.
