AFTER weeks alone at sea, South African adventurer and philanthropist, Gerhard Moolman safely returned to land following his awe-inspiring 4 150- kilometer solo paddle across the Atlantic Ocean.

This extraordinary expedition was a journey of physical endurance, mental resilience, and profound personal growth, dedicated not just to his own transformation but to the spirit and future of South Africa.

Moolman, based in Johannesburg, set off on this solo, self-supported 3 600km rowing journey from Cape Verde, off Africa’s west coast, to the shores of Cayenne in French Guiana. His vessel, Osiyeza – meaning “The Crossing” in isiXhosa – was originally designed for renowned South African paddler, Richard Kohler, who made history in February 2023 by becoming the first person to kayak solo across the southern Atlantic Ocean. Kohler paddled an astonishing 6 403km from Cape Town to Salvador, Brazil, in just 63 days, unsupported and entirely self-reliant.

Moolman’s vessel, Osiyeza, embodies the spirit of exploration, endurance, and sheer grit required to tackle one of the world’s most challenging bodies of water.

This same vessel has now carried two South African adventurers across the vast Atlantic, each undertaking a unique journey of discovery and purpose. Kohler’s adventurous feats date back to 2002, when he set a Guinness World Record for the longest solo journey on a surf ski, paddling 6,152km from Hout Bay, South Africa, to Lamu, Kenya.

This remarkable achievement stood unbroken for two decades. However, it is important to note that while Moolman’s current crossing is a record-breaking feat in its own right, it does not qualify as an official Guinness World Record.

The journey tested him in every imaginable way. Battling relentless back pain, raw skin, and the emotional toll of solitude, he endured some of the harshest conditions the ocean could deliver. Yet, through the trials, he persevered, pushing past his limits and emerging stronger.

“This wasn’t just a journey across an ocean; it was a journey to find strength, purpose, and connection. It was a tribute to South Africa—my land, my people, my home. I wanted to prove that no challenge is insurmountable when it is undertaken for a purpose greater than oneself,” he said.

Moolman’s adventure brought him closer to the natural world in ways he could never have anticipated. From a bird companion that stayed with him for weeks, offering moments of comfort and familiarity, to the breathtaking ocean life that surrounded him, these experiences provided a rare opportunity to connect deeply with nature. “Being out there with nothing but the ocean and its creatures reminded me of how interconnected we all are—with each other and the world around us,” he reflected.

A Commitment to South Africa In dedicating his journey to South Africa, Moolman wanted his efforts to contribute to the country’s future in a tangible way. To show his commitment, he paddled for Door of Hope, a charity devoted to rescuing and caring for abandoned and vulnerable children.

“My commitment was to paddle across the Atlantic for the Door of Hope charity as my contribution to South Africa—my land, my home. My plea is that people take hands together and contribute to our country to make it a better place.”

A Call to Action, Moolman’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when passion meets purpose. Now, he is calling on fellow South Africans and people around the world to take action. Every contribution to Door of Hope helps provide abandoned and vulnerable children with the care, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

“I’ve done my part out on the water. Now I ask you to join me. Together, we can make a lasting impact for these children and for South Africa as a whole.”
