Major traffic disruptions are set to hit Cape Town's city Centre for nearly three weeks as Parliament implements extensive security measures for the 2025 State of the Nation Address.

Parliament has announced a series of road closures and parking restrictions in and around the Cape Town City Hall as it prepares for the SONA scheduled for Thursday, February 6 at 7pm.

Following the address, debates and replies will take place from February 11 to 13. With potential impacts on motorists and pedestrians, authorities urge the public to plan their travel accordingly.

These closures are necessitated by the significant security and logistical measures associated with hosting the annual address, which is a cornerstone of South Africa's political calendar.

“Parliament apologises for any inconvenience caused,” said the spokesperson for Parliament Moloto Mothapo.

He emphasised that the measures are aimed at ensuring the event's smooth operation while maintaining security around the premises.

From February 1 to February 19, major roadways will see restricted access, particularly around Corporation Street, which will experience curbs and fencing deployment from Darling to Longmarket Streets.

A pedestrian gate will be established at the corner of Longmarket and Corporation Streets to facilitate controlled entry.

The closures will intensify on February 6, with full restrictions in effect from 5am until 11.59pm, affecting Darling Street, Hanover Street, and Parade Street, among others.

Starting from February 1, Corporation Street will be closed from 7am until 11.59pm on February 16 as part of the security preparations for the 2025 SONA.

Rehearsal-related closures will take place between February 4 and 7, with key routes such as Darling Street and Parade Street temporarily closed from 6am to 11.59pm each day.

On the day of the address peak restrictions will be in full effect, with major access points, including Darling Street and Corporation Street, completely closed to ensure the smooth running of the event and the safety of attendees.

Parking restrictions will also take effect from 4pm on February 5 through to 11.59pm on February 6 across several streets, including Roeland and Buitenkant Streets. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to seek alternative parking arrangements as access will be severely limited.

“Motorists and pedestrians are advised of parking restrictions,” said Mothapo.
