Police are pursuing a robbery and extortion suspect who fled during a shoot-out in Ngqeleni, in the Eastern Cape on Friday evening, October 11.

The incident resulted in the deadly shooting of the second suspect.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said that on Friday, around 11.20pm, members of Public Order Policing (POP) responded to information regarding two robbery and extortion suspects who were reportedly causing havoc in the Canzibe district of Ngqeleni.

“The suspects were traced and located outside one of the local taverns. It is further alleged that when the suspects spotted the police, they started shooting at them. Police retaliated by returning fire,” said Nkohli.

As stated by Nkohli, one of the suspects, aged 35, was killed, while the other managed to flee.

A 9mm Norinco pistol and ammunition were recovered. No one else was hurt in the shoot-out. An inquest docket and an attempted murder docket were opened for inquiry.

“Extortion and criminal activities that target hard-working businesses will not be tolerated. Those involved in such crimes must know that we will take firm action to bring them to justice.

“I urge the public to cooperate with police by using the Extortion hotline number 082 387 1561 to report incidents of such a nature. Our goal is to eradicate this menace as we are committed to the safety and security of every business and resident,” said Mene.
