In a week-long blitz to rid the North West Province of criminals, police swooped on 1,258 suspects during Operation Shanela, a high-intensity operation that tackled everything from violent crimes to illegal trade between October 7 and 13.

The suspects were arrested for serious crimes including murder, rape, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, drug dealing, illegal liquor trading, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The suspects were among others arrested for murder, rape, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, drug dealing, and burglary,” Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson said.

In addition, 81 undocumented individuals were handed over to immigration authorities. A total of 421 of the arrests involved wanted suspects linked to previous investigations.

The operation also included the search of 262 premises, 2,490 people, and 835 vehicles.

“The operation resulted in the confiscation of liquor, 120 explosives (fireworks), 10 rounds of ammunition, five cell phones, 13 dangerous weapons, a variety of drugs, and three vehicles,” said Mokgwabone.

As part of the initiative, police also carried out compliance inspections, visiting 385 licensed liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers. This initiative aimed to ensure that these establishments were following regulations and contributing to community safety.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, Provincial Commissioner, commended the dedication of officers and law enforcement partners for their efforts to ensure the safety and security of communities.
