“Driving pleasure made to measure, inspired by motor racing.”
That's how BMW describes its revised M Performance programme, with new aftermarket powertrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit accessories developed specially for the 1, 3 and 5 Series.
And right at the top of the list is an engine upgrade for two-litre diesel models: 120d, 320d and 520d owners, that's you. The package combines a bigger intercooler with revised ECU software to boost power from 135 to 147kW, and torque to 420Nm, available from just 1750rpm.
The most noticeable improvement, say the M guys, is that the kit knocks about a second off each model's 0-100km/h sprint time, without adversely affecting either fuel consumption or emissions.
Even more important, it won't affect the warranty on your BMW either.
The M skunk works are also busy with a similar upgrade for turbocharged, six-cylinder engines, as in the 335i, 535i and 640i, designed to work in conjunction with the authoritative aftermarket exhaust system that's been available for the 125i, 335i, 535i and 640i since the second quarter of the year.
The M guys have pimped a 335i sedan for the upcoming Paris motor how with the whole nine yards, including 20” alloys, M Performance brakes with solid-mounted, opposed-piston aluminium callipers all round biting on perforated, internally-vented sports brake discs (370mm in front, 345mm at the rear), upgraded suspension - available from September 2012 - and a body kit based on the new M Sports package.
Extra bling comes in the shape of a rear spoiler, carbon-fibre mirror housings, gloss black grille, while the cabin is decked out with an BMW M Performance steering wheel with race display, interior trim strips in alcantara with open-pore carbon, stainless-steel pedals and a gearshift lever knob and handbrake handle with alcantara gaiters.
No pictures yet - but it will look even more radical than the earlier show cars you see above.
