Last year BMW shacked up with Zagato to create a gorgeous  coupé concept , which was followed by a roadster later that year.

Now the boys in Munich have jumped into bed with another legendary design house in the form of Pininfarina.

We have yet to see their final product in all its glory, but the accompanying teaser sketch portrays an elegant new coupé concept that's set to make its first appearance at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on 24 May.

The Gran Lusso Coupé concept's sleek profile makes us fantasise about what a modern 8 Series would look like, although there are currently no plans to put the concept into production.

CLASSIC PROPORTIONS

BMW calls it the "embodiment of sheer elegance" and promises that it will captivate the observer at first glance with its "Italian exclusivity and modern finesse."

With its long wheelbase, stretched bonnet, short overhangs and set-back greenhouse with sloping roofline, the one-off concept stays true to hallmark BMW proportions.

As for the as-yet-unseen cabin, BMW and Pininfarina promise a "consummate blend of contemporary elegance and luxury" in which the classical BMW driver focus are lent a thoroughly new touch through the influence of Pininfarina.

Beneath the bonnet you'll find a V12 engine, and although BMW has not gone into detail about it, there is only one such engine in BMW's current line-up - this being the 400kW/750Nm 6-litre offered in the 760Li.
