Durban – uMngeni Local municipality has called for patience from residents who had applied for and are awaiting their driving licence cards.

The municipality said it was attending to issues regarding its eye-testing machines that have caused part of the delays.

“uMngeni Municipality would like to acknowledge receipt of complaints received regarding the extended delays in the issuing of drivers’ licence cards to residents,” it said in a statement recently.

“We also alert residents that we are aware of the current problem with the eye test machine as well as the Department of Transport system issues,” the municipality said.

It said the management of the Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) escalated the problem to the provincial Department of Transport (DOT) which sent a technician last week to inspect the machine.

“DOT is currently investigating and we await a response regarding the matter,” it said.

It said in addition to the issues with the local transport department system, there have been problems with the systems and production of cards in Pretoria.

It said these problems range from load shedding, system issues and the broken card machine.

“We profusely apologise for any inconveniences caused and related delays in our residents getting their drivers’ licences and we also wish to reassure residents that the relevant personnel are urgently attending to the matter,” said the municipality.
