Cape Town - Tiger Brands will start buying maize that is not genetically modified (GM) to use in its Purity baby food.
Martin Lind, head of Tiger’s babycare division, said the decision was a response to consumer concerns “arising from the GM debate”.
This comes after the African Centre for Biosafety paid the University of Free State to test seven baby foods for GM content in April.
Tiger Brands will, for now, label its baby cereal to include a “GM alert” on new packaging due on shelves in July.
Haidee Swanby of Biosafety said: “We’re happy with their decision, and we’re hoping they will do the same with the rest of their brands.” - Cape Times
