Umhlobo Wenene FM mourns the loss of Pastor Nomonde Vakalisa

Radio station Umhlobo Wenene FM has confirmed that Pastor Nomonde Patience Vakalisa, died in the early hours of December 4.

Pastor Nomonde, or ‘Smondz’ as she was affectionately known as, joined Umhlobo Wenene FM on July 1, 2008 and was an integral part of the station in the last 16 years.

In May 2024, Pastor Nomonde shared with her listeners that she had fallen ill and was incapacitated. Despite her health challenges, her courage and faith inspired many.

In September 2024, when her condition took a turn for the worse, Umhlobo Wenene FM hosted a Tribute and Fundraising Concert in her honour, a testament to the love and respect she garnered throughout her career.

“Pastor Nomonde was more than a broadcaster; she was a voice of hope, a spiritual guide, and a beloved member of our community. She leaves behind her colleagues at Umhlobo Wenene FM and her son, Emihle Vakalisa, who had been her steadfast companion, often accompanying her to work since he was a little boy,” read a statement from the station.

“Umhlobo Wenene FM extends its deepest condolences to Pastor Nomonde’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. During this difficult time, we come together to honour her remarkable legacy and the immeasurable impact she had on all of us.”

Pastor Nomonde began her journey as the host of the Top 30 chart show “Izikhokho Zomzantsi”. In 2009, she co-hosted the “Break-a-Slice-fast" breakfast show alongside ‘Slyso’, showcasing her versatility and vibrant personality.

In 2012, Pastor Nomonde embraced her passion for gospel music and ministry by hosting “Iqonga lomculo wevangeli” before co-hosting Imvuselelo with the late Rev. Joe Lofafa, then ‘Rev. Faleni’ until June 2022. 

She later shared the platform with Rev. Keketso Bloem from 2022 until March year. In 2023, she became the main anchor of ‘Ngenani Emasangweni Ngendumiso’ with ‘Pastor Zee’, produced by Sibongile “SBJ” James, taking over from the retired Nomthunzi “Mama ka Ma-Asi” Vuza.

Earlier this year, Pastor Nomonde began hosting “Beka Ithemba Lakho Kuye” following the retirement of Rev. Nomathamsanqa Rweqana. Her distinctive voice also graced television audiences on SABC 2's “Ichibi Lendumiso", a 2023 program exploring various Christian denominations and their modes of worship.

Tributes have been pouring in across social media platforms with many of her fans paying their respects to the fallen star.
