Durban — Amid the water crisis in eThekwini, Phoenix Child Welfare has urgently called for water donations.

Phoenix Child Welfare made the call to companies and individuals to help by donating water for the Phoenix Children’s Homes and the Sahara Shelter as the city grapples with an extreme water shortage.

Phoenix Child Welfare director Aroona Chetty said the water crisis in Phoenix has reached alarming levels, significantly impacting the daily lives of residents.

Chetty said the scarcity of clean, safe drinking water is posing severe challenges, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the children in their homes and the clients at the Sahara Shelter.

“Without sufficient water, our children and shelter clients are facing immense distress. Basic needs like drinking, cooking, and maintaining hygiene are becoming increasingly difficult to meet,” Chetty said.

“We are in dire need of 5-litre bottles of water to ensure the well-being of those in our care.”

Chetty explained that the impact of the water crisis extends beyond immediate health concerns. Prolonged water shortages contribute to increased stress and anxiety, exacerbating existing mental health issues among already vulnerable populations. Children are particularly affected, with their growth, development, and overall well-being at risk due to insufficient hydration and sanitary conditions.

“Your support is crucial in this time of need. Together, we can help alleviate the distress caused by the water crisis and ensure that our children and shelter clients receive the care and resources they desperately need,” added Chetty.

Donations can be delivered to Phoenix Child Welfare at 10 Featherstone Place, Whetstone, Phoenix, or pick-ups can be arranged. For more information please contact Aroona at 031 500 3671.
