Durban — Tuesday marked a significant milestone for Grade 7 pupils at Dr BW Vilakazi Primary School in KwaMashu, as the school held a farewell event symbolising the transition from primary to high school.
The gathering served not only as a celebration of their achievements but also as an opportunity for current pupils to hear invaluable advice from a former student who excelled academically.
The school's principal, Ritta Ngcobo, addressed the pupils with a valuable message, encouraging them to keep their focus on studies while nurturing their faith. She likened the new chapter in high school to the beginnings of Grade R, emphasising the importance of humility in their journey ahead.
"There are many steps on the journey to success, and without education you cannot be established. Do not run around with friends because they may lead you astray," said Ngcobo.
Head of Department Buhle Gumede reinforced Ngcobo's message by presenting a stark analogy of life’s decisions. Drawing a comparison to a shattered glass, Gumede reminded pupils that some choices yield permanent consequences, underscoring the weight of their decisions.
"When you go to high school, be cautious. You might encounter boys who could lure you into sexual relations. One decision can lead to a permanent situation of having a baby or a sexually transmitted infection," she said.
Lethiwe Makhanya, a former pupil now attending Isibonelo High School, shared her experiences to prepare the grade 7s for the challenges that await them.
"Keep your head high and do your best," she urged.
Reflecting on her journey, Makhanya advised vigilance in choosing friends, stating that she had opted to distance herself from peers who did not align with her academic goals.
She also encouraged them to engage in sports, asserting that balancing academics with physical activity helped her maintain focus.
"During school holidays, do not roam around; take that time to reinforce what you have learned without the pressure of being in class," Makhanya advised, highlighting the importance of self-discipline.
Teacher Nombuso Kheswa, who started her teaching journey at Dr BW Vilakazi in 2022, shared the valuable lessons learned from her pupils, emphasising the reciprocal nature of teaching and learning.
"The good times have outweighed the bad. I have learned a lot about the pupils, and in turn, they taught me a great deal. I wish them success in their lives," she said.
Majola Sbonuthando, a Grade 7 pupil, expressed her gratitude for the advice received from various speakers during the farewell event.
"My final year in primary school was amazing. We learned many valuable skills, especially through activities like market day and career day. I leave the school encouraged to do my best in my studies," she said.
In conclusion, SGB chairperson Muh Dube reminded the students of the value of respect in opening doors for their futures.
"Do not do drugs and refrain from causing your parents and teachers stress by not following their advice," she said.
