DURBAN – The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has recovered dagga valued at nearly R50 000.
According to information by SANDF operational communication officer of the 121 South African Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Letlhogonolo Mashego, the battalion found dagga weighing 2.64kg, with an estimated value of R7 920, on the border of South Africa and eSwatini.
“The soldiers spotted a man carrying a brown sack, and when the person in question saw the military personnel, he dropped the bag which had dagga and ran back to eSwatini,” Mashego said.
In another incident during a vehicle patrol in Pongola, northern KwaZulu-Natal, three men carrying blue plastic were stopped and searched by military police.
“Six parcels of dagga wrapped with brown tape were found. The dagga had weighed 6.295kg with an estimated street value of R18 885. The three men did not have identity documents in their possession and they claimed that they could not recall their identity numbers,” Mashego said.
In a third incident, military personnel were on foot patrol in the evening when they found an abandoned black-and-red bag next to the Golela port of entry, eSwatini. Inside the bag, soldiers found eight dagga parcels wrapped in brown tape.
“Dagga found weighed 5.41kg with an estimated street value of R16 230,” Mashego said.
The dagga and the three suspects were handed over to Pongola police station.
Police had not commented by the time of publication.
