Educators around the country were honoured at the National Teaching awards for making a lasting impact in the lives of their learners.
Coinciding with World Teachers’ Day on Saturday, the awards in Boksburg recognised teaching excellence in South Africa.
“We are delighted that two of our Western Cape teachers were announced as winners, with a further two ranking in the top 3 in their categories,” Education MEC David Maynier said.
Derek Swart of Paarl Boys’ High School was honoured with the Kader Asmal Lifetime Achievement Award, while the Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET) award went to Ethon Leigh Alexander from Fraaisig Primary School in Knysna.
Swart has been at the helm of Paarl Boys’ High School for over two decades, leading with a clear vision and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, as the motivation following his win in the provincial awards read. “His leadership style is characterised by inclusivity, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
“Under his guidance, the school has consistently achieved outstanding academic results, maintaining a reputation as one of the top-performing schools in the country. His visionary leadership, commitment to holistic student development, and dedication to community engagement make him a deserving candidate for the Kader Asmal Lifetime Achievement Award.
His contributions have left an indelible mark on Paarl Boys’ High School and the broader educational landscape, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
Alexander serves as the deputy principal at Fraaisig Primary School in Knysna, where he teaches Grade 7 Mathematics.
“His unwavering dedication to enhancing the quality of education has made a significant impact on both learners and educators alike. As the head of Learning and Teaching Support Material at the school, he oversees the procurement, distribution, and management of educational resources.
“Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Ethon plays a pivotal role in mentoring both novice and experienced educators, focusing on the integration of ICT and Mathematics in their teaching practices. He conducts workshops for educators from neighbouring schools, sharing best practices and strategies for effective teaching.
“His commitment to holistic learner development is evident through his engagement with community stakeholders, including the South African Police Services and religious institutions. Ethon is set to graduate later this year with an Honours degree in ICT from the University of Pretoria.”
Chadwin Bagley of Rusthof School in Strand was announced as second in the Excellence in Special Needs Teaching category.
Bernice van Blerk, Vredenberg High School was third in the Excellence in teaching Physical Sciences (FET) category.
“We congratulate them on this outstanding achievement, which is a testament to the incredible work these teachers do every day.
As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we thank all of the teachers of the Western Cape: Nearly 1.2 million children are placed in your care each day, and without you, they would have no chance of a brighter future,” Maynier said.
