Cape Town – After seven years on the run, a Cape Town drug trafficker has been nabbed by the Hawks.

Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said they traced and arrested Theron, who has been on the run since 2015, on Wednesday.

“The suspect was arrested by the George Serious Organised Crime Investigation team at a property in Lower Main Road, Observatory near Cape Town. The 42-year-old Renaldo Francois Theron along with other drug dealers allegedly involved in dealing in drugs, specifically cannabis, were under the Hawks radar.

“The other drug dealers were consequently arrested for the same offences. However Theron avoided arrest for alleged possession of drugs worth R243 000,” said Hani.

After his arrest on Wednesday, he appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning on a charge of possession of drugs and the matter was postponed to 18 October for a formal bail application.

Meanwhile, in Pretoria, SAPS arrested a 69-year-old man at Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs worth more than R1.2 million to India.

SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said: “Counter Narcotics Intelligence Head Office, Organised Crime Narcotics Head Office and K9 Unit West Rand operated on intelligence information and intercepted the suspect as he attempted to board a flight destined for India.

“The elderly man was found in possession of eight kilograms of pure heroin worth a street value of approximately R1 216 000 concealed in his travelling bag,” said Netshiunda.

The suspect will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.
