One of the remaining members from the Kaizer Chiefs side that lost the league title on the final day of the 2019/20 season, Reeve Frosler, says he is pleased with the team’s progress since that heartbreaking finish during the Covid-19 campaign.

Chiefs have secured a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership – their best league finish since securing the runners-up spot during the 2019/20 season. They could also match the 57-point tally from that campaign if they beat Chippa United in their final league match at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

Amakhosi have endured turbulent years since narrowly missing out on the title during the 2019/20 season as they went through several coaching changes, appointing both interim and permanent coaches, but still continued to struggle for consistency and positive results.

Chiefs also failed to qualify for the Top 8 in the last two seasons under coaches Cavin Johnson and Nasreddine Nabi. However, following Nabi’s departure, his former assistants, Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Yousseg, have helped steady the ship and guide the club towards a more encouraging campaign.

Their efforts have played a key role in Chiefs returning to the upper end of the table and moving closer to matching the achievements of the 2019/20 side.

Frosler, who remains at the club alongside Bruce Bvuma and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo from that 2019/20 squad, reflected on the team’s progress ahead of Saturday’s clash against Chippa.

“I think if you look at this season, you’ll realise that there have been a lot of improvements since 2019,” Frosler told the media during a pre-press conference at the club’s Naturena Village on Thursday morning.

“I think we are on track to reach the same points tally that we achieved that season.

“So, compared to previous seasons, there has been a lot of improvement and consistency from us as players regarding both results and performances.”
