With “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Michael” currently dominating the box office, movie fans are in for a treat as plenty more blockbusters are set to be released in the coming months.
With May ushering in more legacy sequels following the success of the 2006 hit fashion film, which has since earned a cult following, June is packed with even more star power, while July is shaping up to be a cinematic peak month.
The period from May to July is traditionally the most competitive time for the Northern Hemisphere summer film season, and 2026 is no different. This is when studios launch their biggest "event films" - large-scale spectacle releases, often from major franchises or animation studios - specifically designed to maximise their box office returns.
Below are the major cinema releases until July:
The globally renowned "Mortal Kombat" universe is once again set to come to life in this sequel to the 2021 reboot. Directed by Simon McQuoid, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, the film promises even more R-rated action, with a bigger tournament and a wider character roster.
Fans will also be delighted to see key cast members return, including Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee and Hiroyuki Sanada. They will be joined by fan-favourite fighter Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
"Mortal Kombat II" moves beyond the groundwork of the first film and is set to fully deliver the iconic tournament, with Earthrealm’s champions battling Outworld in a high-stakes fight that will determine the fate of both realms.
Expect a stronger focus on the competition, deeper character backstories, and more elaborate, game-inspired fight sequences.
The film also builds on the enduring success of the "Mortal Kombat" video game franchise, with the first movie enjoying a solid theatrical performance and building anticipation for this sequel.
Release date: May 15.
Directed by Jon Favreau, who also created the original Disney+ series, this film marks the return of "Star Wars" to full theatrical storytelling after a lengthy hiatus. It effectively bridges the streaming era with the big screen and stands as one of Disney’s most important box office releases of 2026.
The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, alongside Grogu, who continues as a central character. It is produced with key Star Wars creative Dave Filoni.
The supporting cast includes Jeremy Allen White, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Blum, Jonny Coyne and Lateef Crowder.
The story is expected to continue Din and Grogu’s journey following the events of "The Mandalorian", focusing on their evolving bond as they navigate a post-Empire galaxy filled with shifting power struggles, remnants of Imperial forces, and emerging threats tied to the broader universe.
Release date: May 22.
This sci-fi alien thriller, helmed by legendary film-maker Steven Spielberg, is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. It marks his return to the alien/UFO genre for the first time since War of the Worlds (2005).
For "Disclosure Day", Spielberg has assembled a strong cast including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo.
The film centres on the global discovery and revelation of alien life. It has been described by Spielberg as “closer to truth than fiction,” drawing inspiration from real-world UAP phenomena.
Some speculation suggests it could serve as a spiritual successor to his 1977 classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", exploring the discovery that humanity is not alone.
Release date: June 12.

The next instalment of Pixar’s beloved animated franchise returns to cinemas for more heartfelt storytelling. Directed by Andrew Stanton, with creative leadership from Pete Docter, the film continues the legacy of one of animation’s most successful franchises.
Fan-favourite voices Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are expected to return as Woody and Buzz, alongside Joan Cusack, Tony Hale and Blake Clark.
While full plot details remain under wraps, the story is expected to take on a modern perspective, exploring the challenges of childhood in a digital world. It will examine what it means to be a toy at a time when children’s attention is increasingly shaped by technology, while revisiting themes of purpose, friendship and belonging.
"The Toy Story" franchise remains one of the most beloved and commercially successful in film history, with each instalment becoming both a box office hit and a cultural moment.
Release date: June 19.
Anne Hathaway in 'The Odyssey.'

Directed by Christopher Nolan, this epic marks his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer. "The Odyssey" brings Greek mythology to life on a grand scale.
The film features a star-studded ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and South African-born Oscar winner Charlize Theron. Fans are also excited to see Zendaya and Tom Holland share the screen once again.
This mythic action epic follows King Odysseus as he struggles to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy, with Nolan’s signature non-linear storytelling expected to play a key role.
Release date: July 17.
Dubbed one of the biggest films, this one marks Marvel’s flagship return to cinemas. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it serves as the fourth MCU Spider-Man instalment.
Tom Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, with Jacob Batalon also returning. New additions include Sadie Sink.
The film marks a fresh start for Parker following the memory-erasing events of "No Way Home", and is expected to focus on a more grounded, isolated Spider-Man operating as a full-time hero in a world that no longer remembers him.
