Brenda Ngxoli has revealed just how much went into preparing for her role as Brenda Fassie in SABC1’s new four-part documentary series, “Vulindlela”.
SABC1 previously confirmed Ngxoli as the lead in “Vulindlela” with Sphamandla Dhludhlu as producer and musician Chicco Twala, a central figure in Fassie’s career.
The award-winning actress took on the role of the “Weekend Special” hitmaker with pride and told the story of her rise to fame, personal challenges, as well as the ultimate redemption through her iconic album “Vulindlela”.
The first episode of the four-part documentary aired on November 15. Ngxoli knew from the start that stepping into Fassie’s shoes would demand more than just talent. It required full commitment and an intense level of emotional work.
“It took me 13 months to prepare for this role. From gym to weight loss drips to personal trainers to Mediterranean diets, you name it … whilst breastfeeding my darling @sky_ngxoli. Dance and movement classes to voice coaches… all in faith that one day I shall be able to portray Brenda Nokuzola Fassie,” she shared on Instagram.
Ngxoli also allowed herself to drop into the emotional weight of Fassie’s life story. In another post, she mentioned that even when cameras stopped rolling, the tears would not.
“Dearest Brenda Fassie.... I gave it my all and still wish I could have done more! You gave us your all, and you deserve all the glory in the world. Even when the cameras were off, I could not stop crying, and yet laughter and joy was had all round.
“Lord knows I had quit acting, but the universe had other ideas. Your role brought me out of retirement. Thank you. Ndiyabulela,” she wrote.
She also admitted to tracking down Fassie’s old associates to understand her better, describing how nervous she felt knowing only a few people were aware of her role before the announcement.
“Your tears became mine. I stalked your associates like hell. Only a handful knew, and God knows how freaked out I was,” the actress shared.
According to the channel’s media statement, “Vulindlela” delves into uncovering Fassie’s fearless spirit and the creative partnership that shaped her unique sound through re-enactments and rare interviews.
“The story and legacy of Brenda Fassie can never be forgotten. Brenda Fassie is a prime example of chasing your dreams and challenging the status quo. Challenging adversity and crafting your own path to success,” said Ofentse Thinane, channel head at SABC1.
The final episode of “Vulindlela” airs on SABC1 on Saturday, December 6, at 8pm.
