This January, ballet enthusiasts are in for a treat as Cape Ballet Africa (CBA) takes centre stage with a stunning rendition of Giselle at the renowned Maynardville Open-Air Festival. Scheduled for two exclusive shows on the 20th and 21st, this production is set to captivate audiences with its spellbinding tale of love, betrayal, and forgiveness, all against the backdrop of the enchanting night sky.

Choreographed by the internationally acclaimed Maina Gielgud, CBA's interpretation of this romantic masterpiece is set to be a highlight of the summer. The exquisite set design, crafted by the prominent Michael Mitchell, complements the delicate performances set to the timeless score by Adolphe Adam. Both performances will feature a recorded accompaniment from the prestigious Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, ensuring a rich, immersive experience.

On the evening of January 20, talented dancers Mia Coomber and Gabriel Ravenscroft will portray the central characters of Giselle and Albrecht, respectively. The following night, this dynamic duo will be replaced by the equally gifted Paige McElligott and Joshua Williams, bringing a fresh dynamic to the iconic roles. Audiences will be treated not only to profound narrative depth but also to a display of technical precision and emotional expressiveness that characterises the art of ballet.

The buzz around the production has already begun to build, with early reviews lauding the exceptional quality of the production. Pippa Hudson from Cape Talk exclaimed, "Outstanding – the dancing was expertly executed, an excellent production with beautiful costumes… wonderful lighting and staging.” Meanwhile, Debbie Hathway from Bizcommunity.com praised the company for achieving "a triumph of artistry, commitment, and vision," highlighting the perfect balance between individual talent and cohesive ensemble performance.
