As the world teeters on the edge of chaos, art continues to weave its potent magic, and few know this better than acclaimed South African dramaturg Brett Bailey. This February, he returns to the stage with a spellbinding adaptation of the Orpheus myth, titled The Stranger, marking a momentous occasion for Third World Bunfight as they celebrate their 30th anniversary. For the first time since 2014, audiences in Cape Town will be treated to this immersive theatrical experience, held at Theatre Arts in Observatory.
The story of Orpheus—a musician whose melodies unravel the mysteries of the universe—has enchanted audiences for centuries. In Bailey's theatre rendition, set against a backdrop marred by xenophobia, the narrative takes a hauntingly local turn. The tale unfolds with Orpheus embarking on a heart-wrenching journey to the Underworld in a desperate quest to reclaim his beloved after her untimely death.
At the helm of this artistic endeavour is Nkosenathi Koela, who not only stars in the lead role but has also composed an evocative score that perfectly complements the emotional landscape of the performance. Described as transporting listeners to realms of profound insight, Koela's music encapsulates the essence of ancestral storytelling, echoing themes of pain, love, and hope. Audiences are invited to experience aural landscapes where the ancients whisper tales of the past while offering visions of the future.
