Have you ever thought of apartment swapping with someone from a different continent or city?
Well, a lot of young travellers are now leaning towards the idea of apartment swapping.
While this concept has been around for a long time, it is only now that it is starting to become a modern travel trend, as we see people document their journeys of exchanging homes temporarily across cities and continents.
Just recently, content creator Thiala June, from Cape Town, shared a video of her stunning home, revealing that she would love to swap it with someone in New York and she is trading the summer with the cold.
Cape Town-based content creator, Thiala June, recently joined the apartment swap trend and successfully found a woman from New York to do the apartment swap with for the Christmas and New Years holidays.

She wrote on the video: “Anyone in NYC want to do a holiday apartment swap? Cape Town for NYC over the years.”
Her video, which was posted on Sunday, November 8, gained a lot of traction with one content creator from New York, Hana Elson, commenting: “Wait YES!!! I just posted too let’s do it!”
Elson currently resides in Brooklyn, and she posted that she would love to do an apartment swap with someone who lives in a region that is warm during the Christmas holidays.
Why are people leaning more towards apartment swapping?
The apartment swapping concept is an opportunity to travel but the good thing is that it is cost-effective.
You don’t have to worry about the accommodation expenses since you are already covered. So both parties save money while still having a comfortable space to stay.
This also allows you to fully experience the local culture since you will be living in a neighbourhood, unlike living in a hotel.
In a way, you also create relationships that could potentially be forever with the people that you apartment swap with, since the concept is built on trust and community.
In addition, Elson and June are not the only ones who have decided to share this journey online.
Lohanny Santos, from New York, and Marie Drachsler from London also did an apartment swap in September after Santos shared on TikTok that she wanted to swap with someone from London.
Both women documented their journeys and even titled it “The Holiday” after the 2006 American Christmas romcom movie, where two girls from different countries swap homes for the holidays to get away from their relationship issues.
