Dubai tourism came to South Africa recently as the Visit Dubai Roadshow made its way through Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, showcasing the city’s world-class attractions and forging stronger partnerships with the local travel industry.
The three-city tour brought together key travel stakeholders and tourism representatives from Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) to engage directly with South African travel agents, tour operators and media.
The aim was to strengthen collaborations and highlight Dubai’s growing appeal as a favourite international destination for South African travellers.
Bader Ali Habib, Regional Director of South Asia, Middle East and North Africa at DET, said he was delighted by the enthusiastic response from the South African market.
“The sessions were an incredible expression of the rich tourism partnership between Dubai and South Africa,” he said. “It is also our tangible way of confirming DET's commitment to the South African market. It is a concentrated effort in fostering relationships and understanding the pulse of the SA market.”
South Africa remains Dubai’s leading source of inbound tourism from Sub-Saharan Africa, with visitor numbers showing strong double-digit growth since 2022.
Around 86% of South African visitors travel to Dubai as couples or families, making family-friendly tourism a major focus of this year’s roadshow. Attendees explored the city’s wide variety of attractions – from pristine beaches and desert adventures to luxury resorts and family entertainment.
Habib noted that South Africans are increasingly drawn to Dubai’s variety, value and accessibility.
“Meeting 20 of Dubai’s stakeholders in person allowed local travel agents to gain first-hand understanding of Dubai’s diverse offerings, and to identify attractions that will appeal to the South African client base. They interacted with stakeholders, hotels and attractions,” he said.

Among Dubai’s most iconic attractions are the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall, the Palm Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab, The Dubai Fountain, and the Museum of the Future, each offering a glimpse into the city’s blend of innovation and luxury.
Beyond its architectural marvels, Dubai also offers pristine beaches, sweeping desert landscapes and a thriving culinary scene, home to both local favourites and Michelin-starred restaurants.
While the city is famed for its five-star hotels and fine dining, Dubai offers experiences to suit all budgets. Visitors can enjoy affordable helicopter flips, yacht tours, and benefit from promotional hotel packages offering cashback bonuses and free nights.
For a familiar taste of home, South Africans can enjoy a pancake from Harrie’s Pancakes, dine at The Meat Co or tashas, or even play a round of golf at The Els Club at Dubai Sports City, designed by South African golf legend Ernie Els.
The event also showcased new and existing hotels, family-friendly activities, and accessible experiences at globally competitive prices - many tailored specifically to South African travellers.
“Working together with South African tourism players allows us all to refine our offerings and continue tailoring competitively priced family experiences for our peak travel seasons,” says Habib.
The roadshow created valuable face-to-face networking opportunities for South African travel professionals, helping them build stronger partnerships with Dubai’s tourism sector.
These connections are expected to lead to more customised travel options and greater value for South Africans eager to explore the region.
With direct flights, visa-free entry for South Africans, and a variety of experiences to suit every traveller, Dubai continues to position itself as one of the most accessible and exciting international destinations for South Africans seeking sun, adventure, and luxury.
