Cape Town versus Johannesburg, the debate never dies, and actor and comedian Anton Taylor just threw some playful fuel on the fire.
Recently on Instagram, he shared his joys of Jozi, giving Mzansi a glimpse of life beyond the Mother City.
Taylor gushed about the Northcliff Water Tower, a Johannesburg landmark dating back to when the city finally got consistent running water.
“Maybe the reason why people in Joburg are so shredded is because you really have to be really fit just to walk 100 metres with the hair being so thin,” he joked, nodding to the city’s hills and pace. “I’m going to be so fast when I go for my Parkrun back in Cape Town.”
The actor also pointed out the vibe differences: in Cape Town, it’s all ocean waves and gentle breezes. In Jozi, it’s “gunshots and hadedas,” a mix of chaos that he’s learned to love.
There’s a certain energy here, fast, unapologetic and inclusive. “One thing about this place is that everybody is welcome. Even Capetonians,” he laughed.
Taylor’s reflections touch on an ongoing debate: feeling unwelcome in Cape Town versus being embraced in Johannesburg’s chaotic hum.
There’s no denying the Mother City has its laid-back charm, but Jozi’s high-energy streets, quirky landmarks and inclusive vibe are making even Cape Town-born visitors fall in love.
Fans are divided, and that’s exactly why the debate rages.
One viewer said, “I’m a Capetonian who moved here at the start of the year, we’ve really grown to love Jozi.”
Another argued, “The landscape in Cape Town is beautiful, but in Johannesburg, the people are the landscape.”
One user even shared a fond memory: "After my matric dance after party in 1996, we watched the sun rise sitting by that water tower. I live in Somerset West (Cape Town) now, but will always be a Joburg girl at heart."
Meanwhile, Johannesburg, born from the 1886 gold rush on the Witwatersrand, developed as a gritty powerhouse of industry, migration, and opportunity. Over time, these different origins have shaped perceptions.
So why is the debate still alive?
Because each city offers something distinct. Cape Town sells breathtaking views, ocean breeze and mountain backdrop. Johannesburg gives you a rhythm, a cultural mash‑up, a “people as landscape” vibe. That hits at something deeper than geography, it’s about connection, pace and identity.
Bottom line: it’s not simply “which city is better” but “which city matches your mood”.
So, be lekker!
