Has singer-songwriter Simphiwe Dana had enough of SA?
Her recent X post appears to confirm it.
āSo Iām leaving SA. Iām gonna be a foreigner elsewhere. I will have all my papers in order, and I will respect the laws of the country Iām going to. And I will have my medical insurance.ā
Of course, her post has drawn mixed reactions from Mzansi.
Some pointed out that the grass isnāt greener on the other side, while others adopted the same āgood riddanceā sentiments when South African farmers received refugee status in the US.
A select few also used the opportunity to criticise her personal relationships.
@Nelisiwe94 wrote: āI'm a South African who is a foreigner too. I have good manners and respect the citizens and the laws of the country I currently reside in. I'm not an entitled foreigner.ā
@hbanhire responded: āEnjoy the foreign cowntry (sic) which you are heading to ā¦ā
@beckythemba posted: āš¶ Music has always had the power to cross borders and heal divisions. Once you take sides, that power shrinks. Stay apolitical let your art speak to all, not just a few.ā
Meanwhile, @FromTrade69991 commented: āWhats wrong with South Aficans? š why do you guys think you are so special. Like who moves to another country and sees the need to anounce this on X and everything they are travelling with. Do you feel guilty for leaving or insecure.ā
Although some creatives have moved abroad to take their careers further, others, like Uncle DJ Waffles, Lady Du, Major League DJz, TxC, DBN Gogo, Focalistic, Kabza De Small, are making their mark with international gigs.
Of course, there is much curiosity about Danaās decision.
This comes after the seasoned singer recently disclosed that she has been a victim of exploitation and theft by her own "people" for the past five years.
At the time, she shared: āIām actually getting madder by the moment. I know I bring genius things. For the past five years, Iāve been stolen from. And my people have been a part of it. Iām tired. The betrayal is painful.ā
Ironically enough, SA is a drawcard destination for digital nomads. It has won multiple awards for its world-class offerings, particularly its safari options. Beyond that, its historical and culturally immersive influence is undeniable.
The question now is, which country will she go to?
