For many, the idea of travelling alone can evoke a sense of uncertainty and fear.
However, for LGBTQ activist and celebrity blogger Mika Stefano, solo travel is a profound journey of self-discovery.
In a recent interview with Gilda Narsimdas on the Curated Wander podcast, Stefano shared his insights on the enriching experiences and challenges that come with exploring the globe independently.
“You learn to be with yourself,” Stefano said, reflecting on the lessons gained from solitary adventures.
He believes that solo vacations are among the most rewarding experiences one can have, as they force individuals to confront unfamiliar situations head-on.
“Just being thrust into something that you don’t have any clue about... you’ve maybe seen pretty pictures or watched documentaries, but now you’re in it,” he described.
For Stefano, navigating how to get from an airport to a hotel is a rite of passage that fosters confidence and resilience.
As a globetrotter with visits to stunning locations such as Prague, Cappadocia, São Paulo, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Boracay, Manila, Mumbai, Cairo and Seoul, Stefano encourages others to embark on solo journeys.
“Many of my travels have been something that I do alone,” he remarked, indicating his preference for exploring the world without a travel companion.
Importantly, he discussed how solo travel presents an opportunity to break social barriers, particularly in foreign destinations.
“In South Africa, in Johannesburg, I'd never go to a restaurant or a club alone, but if you're overseas, you have two options: you're either going to stay in or go and make friends,” he explained.
This adventurous spirit, mixed with the necessity of networking while abroad, adds a layer of excitement to solo trips.
Nevertheless, travel is not without its challenges.
Stefano recalled one of his earliest international holidays to Rio de Janeiro, where he faced a language barrier.
“No one speaks English and they are not willing to even accommodate,” he reminisced.
Such experiences, while daunting, ultimately serve as invaluable lessons in adaptability and problem-solving.
To help mitigate the challenges that solo travellers might face, Stefano recommends familiarising oneself with the local language.
“I like to try to familiarise myself... understand one or two little words, how to say hello or how to say thank you,” he advised.
He shared a recent experience in India that showcased the benefits of immersing oneself in a new culture through activities like food walking tours, which provide a deeper understanding of the city's essence.
As Stefano's insights reveal, solo travel is not only about exploring new places but also about finding oneself in the process.
It’s a challenge that, despite its hurdles, presents the potential for profound personal growth and unforgettable memories.
