A powerful story of resilience, compassion, and community support unfolded in Makau today as the Collen Mashawana Foundation officially handed over a brand new, fully furnished two bedroom house to the Ramarumo family. What began as a devastating tragedy has been transformed into a moment of joy and renewed hope.
Earlier this year, the Ramarumo family faced unimaginable loss when a fire engulfed their home, destroying everything they owned. The fire left the family of six homeless and struggling to survive without basic necessities.

Among the survivors was Emma Ramarumo, a woman living with a disability who was rescued from the burning house. Despite her own challenges, Emma stepped up to care for her family in the aftermath, becoming a symbol of strength and determination.
When the Collen Mashawana Foundation learned about the family’s situation, representatives visited them and made a promise: to help them rebuild their lives and restore their dignity. Today, that promise was fulfilled as the Foundation handed over a new, safe, and fully equipped home. The house comes with furniture, electricity, clean water, and all essential living amenities, offering the family not just shelter, but a fresh start.

The handover was attended by community members, local leaders, and representatives from the Foundation. What began as a quiet morning turned into a celebration of life, unity, and hope. Neighbours gathered to support the Ramarumo family, offering words of encouragement, joining in songs of celebration, and sharing in the emotional moment as the family stepped into their new home.
In his address at the event, Collen Mashawana, Chairperson of the Foundation, spoke about the importance of community upliftment and the values that guide the work of the Foundation.

“At the Collen Mashawana Foundation, we believe that no family should ever face hardship alone. Every tragedy can be met with hope. Today is not just about a new house, it is about giving back dignity and providing a foundation for a better future,” said Mashawana.
In addition to building and furnishing the home, the Foundation also reached out to the wider Makau community. Food parcels were distributed to one hundred of the most vulnerable households in the area, ensuring that the spirit of support and care extended beyond the Ramarumo family.
Emma Ramarumo, moved to tears, expressed her deep gratitude.
“After the fire, I thought our lives were over. We had nothing. But today, we have been given so much more than we ever imagined. This house is more than just walls. It is a home filled with love, dignity, and new beginnings. Thank you to everyone who stood by us,” she said.
