Matshaba Resego has gone above and beyond to excel in school, driven by her passion for law and desire to make a meaningful difference in the country.
The 18-year-old Forte High School learner from the Class of 2024 reflected on her academic journey, sharing insights into her experiences and challenges.
“The academic year was a roller-coaster of emotions because sometimes you are happy and laughing with your classmates, and then the next minute, you are on the verge of tears, stressing about exams.
“My high for the year was maintaining my position in the top five of the school for three consecutive terms and being awarded the opportunity to go to Gold Reef City free of charge, every time.
“My low was not getting the marks I anticipated but still got great marks. The pressure of consistently having to keep up with the standard I set for myself at school was killing me mentally every day but I managed to pull through.”
To ensure she succeeded in matric, the 18-year-old said she had stuck to a plan.
“My exams were extremely stressful but not that bad since I found ways to make studying work for me hence I had to manage my time efficiently and revise before the teacher did.
“I managed to do this by being ahead of the teacher always by two topics and always writing my notes which helped write my exams with less stress but helped me to revise more instead of last minute studying and cramming,” she said.
Reflecting on the biggest highlights of her academic year, Masechaba shared that one of them was gaining recognition throughout the school for her outstanding academic achievements. 'Everyone came to me for academic advice, and that was truly rewarding.'
Another highlight for Matshaba was earning trips to Gold Reef City every term as a reward for her academic excellence, an achievement that set her apart from her peers who could not join her.
She also reflected on how she grew closer to her classmates, something she had not expected. 'I never thought I would get along with them, but we were able to build strong bonds that have now turned into lasting friendships.'
Matshaba aspires to study law at the University of Cape Town, to pursue a career as a corporate lawyer. She also plans to continue her academic journey, aiming to advance her studies and ultimately earn a doctorate
