Much like the One Ring to rule them all in The Lord of the Rings, the Samsung Galaxy Ring also seems to expand and heat up, but the real one doesn’t need a fire in the Shire.
Tech YouTuber Daniel, who founded Zone of Tech, which has over 1.5m subscribers, had a bizarre incident with his smart ring from Samsung.
Though the incident occurred in late September, Daniel had actually owned the device since the beginning of the year. He began to notice that the battery life had severely degraded from seven days to a single day, when he stopped charging it for this reason and wore it as an old-fashioned ring.
It revealed a common issue with the device, showing that many people had experienced the poor battery life.
During an event he flew to on September 20, Daniel reported that he had been using the ring on his finger without charging the device, which had died at this point.
On September 29, he flew from Hawaii to San Francisco before he caught a connecting flight to Frankfurt.
Just before he boarded his final flight to Manchester, England, he noticed his finger with the ring started ‘hurting badly’, and Daniel then tried to take it off. He was unable to get it off, as he also noticed his finger had begun to swell.
“I was experiencing the battery swelling in real time. And that was quite scary since I couldn’t take it off,” he said.
He also noticed it expanding more every few minutes. Worried that the ring would continue to expand or even catch fire, he was forced to miss his flight and head to a nearby hospital because the medical facility at the airport was closed.
In a few minutes, with some ice, hospital staff were able to bring down the swelling of the finger and use oil to finally remove the ring within about five minutes.
Daniel clarified that he was not hospitalised, as some news outlets had reported, as he was treated immediately and the problem solved with no lasting injuries.
Samsung has collected the ring from Daniel and is investigating the cause of the incident.
