Durban - With more than 260 000 views on Facebook and just over 100 000 on YouTube, it’s safe to say the Enter Durban video is a hit.
The brainchild of Kierran Allen of Novas Digital Cinema, the Enter Durban video is a self-funded video that displays the beauty of Durban, from its beaches to architecture.
The video is three minutes and 24 seconds long. It took two years to complete and 800 hours of editing.
Allen, a photographer, and his business partner Warren Hill, who is also a professional drone pilot, said they used a Canon 1DX and 5D3 camera with a DJI Phantom3 Pro drone.
“Not everything you see is shot from the drone, we opted for the time lapse concept; so, basically, I just placed my camera on a tripod and set it to take pictures at certain intervals,” he said.
For example, the shot of the Queen Mary leaving Durban Harbour took four hours to shoot from the Spinnaker building just outside uShaka.
“The video is not a sales pitch or advert. We did it because we are Durban boys and we love this city. After uploading the video, we received messages from many South Africans abroad. The video was shared more than 11 000 times on Facebook,” said Allen.
He said the hardest part of putting the video together was deciding what to keep. “Durban is such a beautiful city and we went to so many places. Trying to fit them all in was difficult. We had to leave some out. But I think what we have best represents Durban and its people.”
