Bali Island, Indonesia - A symbolic "cheque" worth 1.4 million "green footprints" was presented Friday to the head of the United Nations Climate Secretariat, Yvo de Boer, at the World Climate Conference in Bali.

The footprints, presented by children from a school on Bali, represent the number of kilometres covered by more than 128 000 children worldwide by foot or bicycle, equalling a distance of more than 35 times the earth's circumference in an effort to highlight greener modes of transportation in the fight against climate change.

The action was organized by the group Climate Alliance of European Cities with Indigenous Rainforest Peoples.

According to the group's chairwoman Ulrike Janssen, children between the ages of 4 and 10 took part in the activity in the framework of a climate action week in which schools and kindergartens taught environmental and climate issues.

As a contribution to the climate protection, the kids would travel more by walking and biking. - Sapa-dpa
