Khanyisa Mayo has made a strong statement in his bid to earn a permanent move to Kaizer Chiefs next season after scoring in their 4-1 win over Magesi at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

After struggling with injuries early in his loan spell from CR Belouizdad, Mayo initially found it difficult to break into the match-day squad once he returned to full fitness.

But his fortunes shifted in Polokwane, where the 27-year-old was included in the travelling squad and went on to score the final goal in Chiefs’ dominant victory over Magesi – sealing their fifth consecutive Betway Premiership win and strengthening their hold on third place.

Mayo’s goal was followed by an emotional celebration, as he covered his mouth with one hand and pointed to the sky with the other  – an apparent response to critics who questioned his suitability for the club, especially given the legacy of his father, Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo.

The moment sparked celebrations from the entire Chiefs bench and players, who rushed onto the field, while Mayo later knelt after the final whistle in a quiet moment of reflection.

Speaking after the match, Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef highlighted the significance of the goal for the striker, who has been under pressure to secure a long-term future at the club.

“It meant a lot. I think he has been doing good work,” Ben Youssef said. “He was unlucky with injuries, but he’s back. He’s fighting at training. He was a little bit unlucky in the few games where he didn’t score. I think he’ll help the team a lot.”

With Chiefs aiming to extend their winning run and close the gap on second-placed Orlando Pirate – who are 10 points ahead but have played one more match – Mayo will look to carry his momentum into their next fixture against Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
