Soweto giants Orlando Pirates are mourning the death of superfan Charles Fantisi, affectionately known as Makhalanjalo.

“Makhalanjalo” which means “he who is always crying”, was a prominent and passionate supporter of the club, and was often seen topless at games with a message of encouragement on his chest.

“Orlando Pirates sends heartfelt condolences on the passing of long-standing and passionate supporter Charles ‘Makhalanjalo’ Fantisi,” the club wrote on their social media channels on Saturday afternoon.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the Buccaneers community during this difficult time.”

Fantisi’s death comes three years after another well-known Pirates fan, Dejan Miladinovic, passed away. Miladinovic, originally from Serbia, died in March 2023 after spending some time at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto and was often visited by Fantisi.

Fantisi’s presence in the stands became part of the matchday theatre at Orlando Pirates games, a reminder of the deep passion supporters bring to the club. For many Buccaneers fans, he was more than just a familiar face in the crowd – he embodied the unwavering loyalty and emotion that define the Pirates faithful, and his absence will be deeply felt at stadiums across the country.
