AmaZulu FC find themselves under mounting pressure as their recent run of results has dealt a significant blow to their top-four ambitions.

They will be eager, however, to extend Magesi FC’s struggles when the two sides meet in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night at the Princess Magogo Stadium (7.30pm kick-off).

Usuthu are currently enduring a three-match winless run, a few negative results that has seen them lose momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign. After positioning themselves strongly within the top five for much of the season, this downturn has forced them into a difficult position, with urgency now surrounding their bid to revive their fortunes.

Their narrow 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC proved costly, dropping them to sixth place on the table. They were also overtaken by neighbours Durban City, who have quietly climbed into fourth spot, further tightening the race for continental qualification.

Despite assembling a squad widely regarded as a work in progress — with several players arriving at the club at the start of the season — AmaZulu have produced encouraging performances overall.

However, inconsistency has crept into their game, not only in results but also in their execution in key moments on the pitch.

With the chasing pack closing in and the foundation built earlier in the season now under threat, coach Arthur Zwane will be determined to prevent his side from faltering at a decisive point in the campaign.

Although their recent form paints a concerning picture, context remains important. Outside of the defeat to Stellenbosch, their other two losses in this stretch came against league heavyweights Orlando Pirates (2-0) and Mamelodi Sundowns (1-0).

In both fixtures, they were competitive and could arguably have taken something had they been more clinical in front of goal.

They now face a Magesi side enduring its own struggles, winless in their last eight matches and battling for survival. Zwane will view this as an opportunity for his team to regain confidence and reignite their top-four push.

Former Platinum Stars coach Allen Freese has returned in an attempt to steer Magesi away from relegation danger. While the club managed to secure survival last season under Owen da Gama, the pressure has intensified this term, and the experienced 69-year-old faces a stern challenge to guide them to safety.

The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw. For Magesi, defeats have piled up, with victories proving hard to come by with only two wins this season in 18 matches.

For Usuthu, the focus will be on capitalising on the chances they consistently create and ensuring they do not let another opportunity slip.

Usuthu are a side that often plays on the front foot and generate opportunities, Their average of a goal per match highlights an area requiring improvement. Greater efficiency in the final third will be central to Zwane’s plans heading into this encounter.

With two further home fixtures to follow — including a Nedbank Cup quarter-final against Casric Stars and a league KZN derby against Richards Bay FC — this upcoming stretch could ultimately define AmaZulu’s season.
