As the relentless Betway Premiership schedule unfolds, Kaizer Chiefs are adopting a strategic approach of squad rotation to maintain their position as serious title contenders.

Amid the whirlwind of 11 fixtures crammed into just 48 days, Chiefs play Marumo Gallants at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, with kick-off set for 7.30 pm.

Following their recent triumph in the CAF Confederation Cup against ZESCO United, co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef highlighted the challenge posed by such a congested fixture list. He affirmed the necessity of utilising their squad depth to navigate this intense period successfully.

“We know this month is so busy for us; every two or three days, we have a game. We’ll play 11 games in 48 days, so that we will need the entire squad,” stated Ben Youssef. “We have big squads so that we can make rotation, and we can allow for the other players to take rest.”

Chiefs currently find themselves in an advantageous position, sitting third in the league standings with 27 points amassed from 14 games. Their current form has been noteworthy, remaining undefeated since a setback against Sekhukhune in September.

The team’s aim against Gallants is to secure all three points, which would not only bolster their tally to 30 but also reinforce their aspirations to challenge league leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the wake of a hard-fought victory over Zambia, Youssef addressed criticisms of the team’s performance, which many found uninspiring despite the three points secured.

Youssef made it clear that his primary focus lies in winning matches rather than playing good football.

“Now the most important thing is winning games, and if it comes with good football, we will be happy, but if not, we will also be happy because the only thing that matters is securing full points.

“We had a lot of meetings with the players, discussing the importance of winning.”

Conversely, Marumo Gallants are having a difficult season thus far. Coming off a 2-0 loss to TS Galaxy last week, they are grappling with their own pressures, languishing in the 12th position with only 15 points from 15 matches, threatening their safety from relegation.

Their recent performances show little promise, with three losses and two draws in their last five league outings.

In the spotlight for Chiefs is Flávio Silva, the Guinea-Bissau-born striker who has made an impact since joining the club. Scoring four goals in just eight league games, Silva has created a buzz among fans and is likely to return from a brief absence to further his goal-scoring streak against Gallants.

Gallants’ Jaisen Clifford will be looking to add to his tally as well; the dynamic winger leads his team with goals this season and is keen on securing a fourth against a formidable opponent.

With contrasting fortunes, this matchup promises to be pivotal for both teams as they seek to redefine their seasons in the coming weeks.
