Sekhukhune United handed Orlando Pirates their first defeat of the season at Orlando Stadium in August last year, and that result still rankles with the Buccaneers.

While that specific setback may not be the primary focus when Pirates return to action on Saturday, they travel to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane with a point to prove. The venue itself holds fond memories; it was here just last month that they secured the 2025 Carling Black Label Knockout Cup with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Marumo Gallants.

The mid-season break officially comes to an end for Pirates, who have spent the last few weeks fine-tuning ahead of a crucial phase in their campaign. Under the guidance of coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers finished 2025 at the top of the table and are currently favourites to clinch their first league title in 14 years.

However, Saturday’s clash represents a different challenge altogether. There are three vital league points at stake against a Sekhukhune side that has established itself as one of the most consistent performers in South Africa’s top-flight over recent years.

Pirates’ primary objective will be to reclaim the Premiership leadership. Standing in their way is a familiar face: Sekhukhune are coached by Eric Tinkler, a former Pirates head coach who knows exactly what it takes to frustrate his old side.
