After a lengthy absence, Wayde Jooste made a compelling return to football with an inspirational performance that propelled Stellenbosch FC to victory in his debut match.
Jooste last played in March 2025, and this match was not just about the three points; it also marked a poignant return to professional football. He helped Stellenbosch kick off the 2026 calendar year with a much-needed 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.
The match, played in Polokwane on Tuesday evening, was met with jubilation from the Stellenbosch faithful, who celebrated a well-deserved win. Jooste, who joined Stellenbosch in December, took to the pitch with an eagerness not only to prove himself but to contribute meaningfully to his new team.
Stellenbosch have been in dire straits for most of the season due to a poor run in the Premiership, leaving the team marooned in the basement of the league for months. With this win, Stellenbosch have created some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.
Having made 200 appearances in the Premier Soccer League across different teams since 2013, the Gqeberha-born defender’s journey back has been fraught with challenges. His debut performance alongside another Pirates man Tshegofatso Mabasa, who scored the solitary goal, was a moment that resonated deeply with Jooste.
“It was an amazing feeling being back on the pitch,” Jooste expressed, his voice rich with emotion. “I had been without a team for a while and was training on my own daily for months. It was wonderful for me to make my debut for Stellenbosch, and all glory to God.”
Jooste’s reflections spotlight the grit and determination he has displayed amid personal adversity. Playing 84 minutes before being substituted, Jooste felt the weight of his journey surge through him.
“It was a bit emotional after those challenges, but I’m so happy for the team and the club that we were able to pick up the win, because we know we’re not where we are supposed to be and that this is a step in the right direction,” he continued, showcasing an unwavering commitment to his team’s aspirations.
This victory has breathed fresh hope into the Stellies squad, who are now motivated to climb the league standings. Following the match, Jooste noted the new sense of encouragement within the dressing room.
“It’s the type of performance and result that gives us inspiration for the second half of the season,” he remarked, reflecting the camaraderie and determination burgeoning within the team.
“Playing away in this league isn’t easy, and we were up against a team (Sekhukhune) that is up there fighting for the title, so beating them in their own backyard is something that should give us a lot of confidence moving forward,” he concluded, eyes set firmly on future successes.
As Stellenbosch prepares for their next challenge, an encounter against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday evening, Jooste emphasised the importance of harnessing their recent triumph.
With renewed determination and a sense of purpose, Jooste and Stellenbosch FC would want to translate the energy from this inspirational victory into further achievements as the season unfolds.
