Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the departure of defender Mosa Lebusa, ending his illustrious seven-year tenure at Chloorkop.

The 33-year-old, one of the most decorated players in the club’s modern history, is poised to join Stellenbosch FC as a free agent. Since making the switch from Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) back in 2018, Lebusa has been a stalwart in the Sundowns defence, boasting an impressive tally of 207 appearances and 11 trophies.

His contribution to the Brazilians’ backline cannot be understated; he played an instrumental role in securing seven league titles during his time at the club.

In a heartfelt statement, Sundowns celebrated the defender’s remarkable journey: “After seven incredible years, seven league titles, 207 appearances, nine goals and four assists, the Yellow Nation salutes and celebrates Lebusa. Masandawana wish you the best as you begin the next chapter of your journey.”

Despite being a respected figure in the dressing room, Lebusa’s playing time dwindled during the 2025/26 campaign. Under coach Miguel Cardoso, the veteran found himself overshadowed by the arrival of Bafana Bafana defender Khulumani Ndamane from TS Galaxy.

With only nine appearances across all competitions this season, Lebusa reached a mutual agreement with Sundowns to terminate his contract before its expiration. The acquisition of Ndamane had signaled the writing on the wall for Lebusa, as speculation regarding his exit intensified due to a decline in playing opportunities.

Stellenbosch FC are currently navigating a transitional phase under the stewardship of veteran coach Gavin Hunt, who succeeded Steve Barker in December 2024. The club finds itself in 14th place, necessitating experienced reinforcements to provide stability to a youthful side currently challenged with avoiding the relegation zone.

Lebusa’s extensive experience, notably his valuable CAF Champions League appearances, promises to provide the leadership Stellenbosch need as they aim to transform their fortunes. Having spent eight years away from the Western Cape, he returns equipped with significant accolades and the respect earned through his golden era at Sundowns.

As Lebusa embarks on this new chapter, his influence on South African football stands as a testament to an illustrious career that has encapsulated both personal and collective achievements on the grandest stage. Although Stellenbosch have yet to officially announce the signing, Lebusa attended training at the Winelands club on Sunday.
