Mamelodi Sundowns have sent a clear message that their grip on domestic dominance will not loosen easily, launching an assertive recruitment drive designed to reinforce their squad amid increasing pressure from their closest rivals.

The Brazilians have led the way in the transfer market, and with the league set to resume after a prolonged international break, the title race is expected to gather momentum quickly.

This season’s Betway Premiership is shaping up to be among the most competitive in recent memory. After several years of Sundowns’ control, the championship is widely tipped to be far more closely fought.

What is traditionally a subdued January transfer window has bucked the trend, evolving into one of the busiest periods in years. The activity could prove decisive in determining where the silverware ultimately ends up.

Top sides across the league have wasted little time in strengthening their squads, ensuring they are well equipped for the challenges that lie ahead when the campaign resumes.

Below, we take a closer look at five of the standout recent signings and the impact they could have at their new clubs.

Khulumani Ndamane

A long-standing target for Sundowns, Ndamane’s steady rise made a move away from TS Galaxy feel inevitable. His consistent performances for the Rockets marked him as a player ready for the next level.

The left-footed centre-back has since become a regular feature in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squads, underlining his growing stature. His arrival should allow him to slot comfortably into the Sundowns system, adding balance and depth to a defence that has only recently found stability through the partnership of Grant Kekana and Keanu Cupido.

Monnapule Saleng

This could yet emerge as one of the signings of the season, provided the former Orlando Pirates winger settles quickly. Sundowns have long searched for a player with Saleng’s profile, particularly after the departure of Lucas Ribeiro Costa left them short of creativity in wide areas.

Equally comfortable on the right flank and across the attacking line, Saleng brings qualities that have been missing from the squad. Should the Brazilians succeed in unlocking his best form, his influence could be pivotal in their bid to retain the league crown.

Brayan Leon

The 25-year-old Colombian striker arrives at Sundowns with a solid career return of 48 goals and 30 assists from 217 appearances, adding both experience and South American flair to the squad.

Crucially for head coach Miguel Cardoso, Leon also offers strong link-up play, having contributed a respectable number of assists throughout his career. His versatility further enhances an already well-stocked attacking department.

Andre de Jong

The former Stellenbosch FC midfielder strengthens an already formidable Orlando Pirates squad, bringing experience and tactical adaptability. De Jong’s ability to operate in midfield or in more advanced central roles provides the Buccaneers with valuable options.

With three goals and one assist this season, he arrives match-fit and ready to make an immediate impact as Pirates continue to press their title ambitions.

Lebogang Phiri

The ex-Bafana Bafana international represents another significant acquisition for the Limpopo-based side Sekhukhune United. Phiri’s career has taken him across Europe, with valuable experience gained in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in France.

Tasked with filling the gap left by Miguel Timm, his composure and exposure to top-level football could be vital as Babina Noko pursue what could be their first genuine title challenge. Phiri’s experience may prove decisive as they look to upset the established hierarchy at the summit of the table.
