Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau has been linked with what could prove to be the standout move of the current transfer window, with Orlando Pirates reportedly emerging as his potential destination — a switch that would place significant pressure on the club’s existing right-back options.

Following the shock transfer that saw Monnapule Saleng cross the divide to join rivals Sundowns — a move with direct implications for what is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing league title races in recent memory — the potential arrival of Mudau at Pirates would raise the stakes even further.

Not only would he bring vast domestic and international experience, but he would also arrive with a reputation as one of the continent’s leading defenders.

Mudau’s situation at Sundowns has been uncertain for some time. Earlier this season, the talented right-back missed the opening weeks of training amid a contractual dispute with the club, a standoff that only heightened speculation over his future. Given that he had already been linked with a move away even before the campaign began, a transfer at this stage would not come as a major surprise.

It eventually took the intervention of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos for the 30-year-old to resume duties at Sundowns, underlining the seriousness of the situation and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his long-term future.

While Pirates boast an exciting and well-balanced squad with solid options at right-back, Mudau’s arrival would undoubtedly elevate the position further. However, his potential signing would also give the club’s current incumbents plenty to think about as competition for places intensifies.

Deano van Rooyen

The former Stellenbosch FC defender has made a respectable impression since his move from the Cape Winelands, a switch that also paved the way for his breakthrough into the national team. However, an injury setback early in the season stalled his momentum.

With just four appearances across all competitions so far, Van Rooyen remains a player of clear quality and should still be firmly in coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s plans. When fully fit and match-sharp, he offers balance and reliability down the right flank.

Thabiso Lebitso

Lebitso, formerly of Chippa United, has emerged as the preferred option in recent weeks, making seven appearances this season after a difficult previous campaign disrupted by injury.

Ouaddou has rotated heavily in the role, even deploying midfielder Kamogelo Sebelebele and youngster Siyabonga Ndlozi, who has seen limited minutes so far.

Still, Lebitso has featured in seven of the last eight matches, delivering steady performances and positioning himself as a strong contender, particularly with a congested fixture list demanding frequent rotation.

Bandile Shandu

With two established right-backs currently ahead of him, Bandile Shandu has struggled for regular game time this season. The arrival of a high-profile signing such as Mudau could further limit his opportunities, potentially forcing him to consider a move elsewhere.

At 30 years old, consistent minutes are crucial for Shandu, yet those opportunities appear scarce at present. He has featured in just two league matches this season, with the 1–0 win over Orbit College the only game in which he completed the full 90 minutes.

Ultimately, Mudau’s arrival would strengthen Pirates and raise internal competition, but — much like the Saleng move — it would also be a transfer that bolsters a direct rival. In a title race expected to go down to the wire, such decisions could prove decisive when the season reaches its conclusion.
