Orlando Pirates were arguably the best team in the first half of the season, winning two trophies — the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout — while finishing top of the Betway Premiership standings.
Should they continue with all the positives they displayed during that part of the campaign, they could all but be crowned champions of the land come May, ending a 14-year title drought. But that is easier said than done.
They need to take lessons from their shortcomings, as they will be the first to admit that they are still far from being a well-oiled machine.
Below, we look at five areas that coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his technical team need to strengthen in order to ensure a watertight campaign in their bid to reach the promised land.
The recovery of Makhehleni Makhaula and Olisah Ndah excited the Ghost fans late last year, with the duo having been sidelined for a lengthy spell. However, Makhaula was clearly rusty when he made a handful of appearances, something that must have slightly frustrated Ouaddou as it dented the team’s fluidity and cohesion.
But Ouaddou cannot throw his toys out of the pram. He has to ensure that both players get up to speed and in tune with the team’s game model and overall approach. Ouaddou needs the two defensive players at their best next year, especially with Mbekezeli Mbokazi set to leave next month and Sihle Nduli expected to be sidelined for some time.
Sipho Chaine has been Pirates’ No. 1 over the past few seasons, playing most of the matches and growing in leaps and bounds as a result. That growth has not gone unnoticed; he is currently part of the Bafana Bafana squad competing for the AFCON title in Morocco.
While Chaine’s ascension is one for the books, he needs to be given sufficient rest when possible. This would also allow game time and sharpness for his understudy, Melusi Buthelezi. Buthelezi has done well when called upon, but truth be told, he has looked shaky at times — something that could be attributed to limited game time.
Pirates are said to have boosted their striking department with the signing of Stellenbosch FC striker Andre de Jong, who was also on their radar during the winter transfer window. The Kiwi is expected to bring added vigour, with his ability to hold up play, take shots from both close range and distance, and motivate teammates when the chips are down.
His imminent arrival should ease some of the pressure on No. 9 Evidence Makgopa, while potentially confirming the exit of Tshegofatso Mabasa. Mabasa, the club’s second all-time top goalscorer, has featured in just nine matches this season, despite Ouaddou confirming that he is fit and available for selection.
When Camren Dansin started against Mamelodi Sundowns, it was viewed as a risky selection. In the early stages, that proved to be the case, with the youngster tormented by Sundowns’ seasoned stars. However, Dansin would redeem himself in style, scoring a stunning strike that was voted Goal of the Month.
While his talent is undeniable, Dansin still has a lot to learn, which is why he must be introduced gradually to build "Big Match Temperament". It will be crucial for Ouaddou to manage his squad in a way that ensures players remain involved and confident.
The 2026 calendar year will be hectic, with many players competing for places in the final squads for the FIFA World Cup. With the current Bafana Bafana squad at AFCON largely made up of Pirates players, many will be eager to retain their places for the global showpiece.
However, they must not get carried away. Their focus must remain on delivering consistently for Pirates. With a first league title since 2012 looking more possible than ever, it would be especially rewarding if the players head to the global stage as champions of South Africa.
