A day after head coach Gavin Hunt's departure, Durban City secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Orbit College at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg, putting on a commanding display of skill and determination.
Caretaker coach Pitso Dladla hailed the win as a reflection of his players' unwavering commitment, marking the team's first away win in 14 matches — a vital achievement given Hunt’s recent departure.
This triumphant performance not only elevates Durban City's position in the league standings but also sparks renewed hope as they head into the festive season.
Dladla expressed his pride in the team, stating: "You could see, before the commencement of this game, the players really wanted to win. Sometimes, as coaches, you put plans together, and those plans don't always work out. Today, however, the plan worked because everybody was committed to their role."
Goals by Thabo Nodada, Samkelo Maseko and Haashim Domingo underscored the team's offensive prowess, exemplifying their potential to regroup and persevere amid adversity.
"The team was focused and determined to win tonight. I am also so happy for the team to win away from home. Everybody put in a shift," Dladla affirmed, highlighting the collective effort that culminated in this victory.
A notable highlight of the match was the team's clean sheet, a feat Dladla attributed to a concerted effort from all players. He emphasised the importance of teamwork in defensive situations, saying: "We defended really well. Sometimes, when we concede goals, we tend to look at the defenders and the goalkeeper, but some come from laziness up front or from losing possession.
"But today, what was pleasing was the fact that every player was willing to defend from the front."
This attitude undoubtedly played a pivotal role in securing their successful outing.
As last season's National First Division champions, Durban City now aim to harness this newfound momentum, particularly as they prepare for their subsequent encounter against Polokwane City on 25 January 2025.
The match presents an opportunity for the team to build on their encouraging win and fortify their standing.
This victory is music to their supporters' ears as they head into the festive season. The team's performance not only signals a promising trajectory for their campaign but also aims to uplift the spirits of loyal supporters who have steadfastly stood by them through thick and thin.
