Soweto giants Orlando Pirates have confirmed that defensive lynchpin Mbekezeli Mbokazi will be departing the club for Chicago Fire in America’s Major League Soccer.

"Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire for the transfer of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi," the club said in a statement released on Tuesday.

"The 20-year-old completed a successful medical and finalised personal terms with the Men in Red during his recent trip to the United States, paving the way for a move of a lifetime for the Bafana Bafana international," they said.

Mbokazi only made his senior debut for the club last season, but has since gone on to become one of their key players. His importance was confirmed ahead of the current season when he was appointed as the club’s vice captain.

On the international stage, Mbokazi has also become a big player for Bafana Bafana and is expected to play a major role at the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off in three weeks.

"Following positive discussions between the management of both clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025," the Sea Robbers said in their statement. "He will then embark on a new chapter of his football journey across the Atlantic, joining Chicago Fire as the next step in what promises to be an exceptional career."

The statement confirms that Saturday's Carling Knockout clash between Pirates and Marumo Gallants will be Mbokazi's last in a Pirates jersey.

The move to MLS marks a major step in his career, with Chicago Fire viewing him as a defensive cornerstone – whether in the back line or as a hybrid option capable of stepping into midfield when needed – in a league that continues to grow in quality and global visibility.

For a 20-year-old already establishing himself in the national team setup, the opportunity to test himself abroad will accelerate his development even further.

For now, all eyes will be on Saturday’s match, where Mbokazi will don the black and white of Ezimnyama ngenkani ezikamagebhula for the final time.

The club’s supporters will hope for a performance befitting the impact he has made, while the player himself will be eager to sign off on a high note before turning his focus to Afcon – and a new chapter in the United States.

After this weekend, domestic football in South Africa goes on hiatus, with the focus shifting to the Africa Cup of Nations.
